Aum mantra conveys the concept of omnipresence. Symbol Aum consists of three syllables, namely A, U and M. The letter A symbolize conscious state, letter U the dream state and letter M the dreamless sleep state of our mind. The whole symbol together stands for the fourth state which combines previous three states and move to whole different level of Samadhi (Supreme consciousness)
There are so many other interpretations for the Aum symbol. Three letters represent the dimensions of length, breadth and depth while the entire symbol represents Divinity which is beyond the anything represented through three dimensions in real world. They also represent three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter while the whole symbol represents the creator. Three letters can also be interpreted as past, present and future while the entire symbol stands for Unity where time is not defined. Aum also depicts three stages of yoga namely asana, pranayama and pratyahara. The entire symbol represents Samadhi, the goal for which three stages are steps.
Surprisingly we can see lot of these interpretations that wrote several thousands of years ago have striking similarities with theories in modern quantum physics and psychology. Lot of times science can tell us the “how” part but cannot explain the “why”. Now we know “how” the universe started from singularity billions of years ago. But who can tell us “why” it happened?
Yogi can practice Aum mantra with the flow of breath. Imagine the sound of mantra internally during inhale and exhale.
